2011 Season Round Up

17th-19th June KNOCKHILL

The next race saw us travelling all the way to Knockhill in Scotland. The weather was atrocious; the Scottish riders all say that if you can’t see the mountains it’s raining and if you can see the mountain then it’s going to rain, and this proved to be right. Ian had trouble with the set up of the bike for these extremely wet conditions, he couldn’t soften the rear suspension enough to get traction exiting corners. It ended up with Tim Reeves very kindly lending one of his rear shock and spring set ups.

Again this was another new circuit for Ian and Ryan. They ended up qualifying 16th and finishing 12th in the first race. In the second race, they were doing well and had got up to 12th when the race was stopped. Having to wait for the restart, the bike’s tyres – being old, from Anglesey in 2010 – let Ian down; they had no grip. They ended the race in 15th place.

July 9-10th SNETTERTON

Snetterton was a new longer track for Ian and he and Ryan qualified 15th. In the races they finished 15th, 12th and 13th.

August 13th and 14th CADWELL PARK

Cadwell Park is Ian’s least favourite track; he disliked it from the first time he raced there in 2008. He and Ryan qualified 18th and finished 15th in the first race.

Ian fettled the bike before the second race and it resulted in him having a cracking start; they moved up a few positions by the end of Park Straight, then disaster struck at Chris Curve (which is taken in fifth gear) – another sidecar came up the inside of them, so Ian moved to give some space as it is very narrow and just touched the grass with the sidecar wheel, which led to them sliding into the tyre wall. This was the end of their weekend’s racing.

The next couple of hours were spent in the medical centre. Ian had cracked a rib and Ryan was sent to hospital but was discharged without too much injury. Ryan had hung onto the bike for as long as possible, and perhaps if he had baled earlier he would have got away without any injury.

September 9th-11th DONNINGTON PARK

At Donnington Park Ian enlisted Phil Sloane as passenger as Ryan was injured. The weekend saw Ian struggling with the bike’s lack of power. He didn’t know what the problem was, but as Donnington is a track he likes he was very disappointed with the results he was getting. It was certainly nothing to do with the change of passenger, as Phil is an experienced passenger. They qualified 20th and finished 15th and 12th in the races. The following weekend saw a trip to Basingstoke to put the bike on Dynotech’s dyno and this showed it was down 20+ horsepower.

September 23rd-25th SILVERSTONE

This was Ian’s first time at Silverstone and he again had Phil on board as Ryan was still not fit. The bike was still not at full power, so Saturday night saw Ian changing the engine, working well past midnight to be ready for the morning. They had qualified 15th on Saturday morning before the engine change, and gained 9th and 11th places in the weekend’s races.

October MONDELLO PARK

We had a long trip over to Ireland; first we had to get to Pembroke docks to catch the ferry for the four-hour crossing to Rosslare, then drive two hours to Mondello. When we left home it was lovely sunny and dry weather, on arriving in Ireland it was raining and this continued for the whole weekend. The pits became flooded and we had to move our awning and all of our equipment as the water was several inches deep. The track was treacherous due to the amount of water on it. Ian and Phil wanted to do well this weekend as it was double points in all the races. They qualified 15th.

In the first race they had a race-long battle with Greg Lambert and Shelley Smithies and finished 12th. Race two was similar atrocious conditions and again a wheel to wheel race with Greg and Shelley saw Ian and Phil finish 13th.

It had actually stopped raining for a short while prior to the start of the third race, and this resulted in the track being even more dangerous; as it began to dry it became even more slippery. Ian was feeling confident and looking forward to more of the same. Nearing the end of the first lap, having done some overtaking and gaining a few positions, youthful exuberance overcame him, he got on the gas too quickly, lost the back end and flipped over exiting a left-hander. Phil was OK, jumped up and lifted the bike off Ian. Off Ian goes to the medical centre again; he fractured a bone in his right knee and sustained severe ligament damage.

Ian was off work for three months, starting again cautiously after Christmas. He has been going for physio sessions and swimming regularly to get fit for the 2012 season. On top of getting himself back in working order, he has to prepare the bike, including repairing the damage it sustained.

Despite the drama of Cadwell and Mondello, Ian finished the 2011 championship in a respectable 14th place with 63 points. He would like to thank:

Mick Robson Racing - 2011 so far.....

Ian is competing in the Eastern Airways British F1 Sidecar Championship again this year.

There are some changes from 2010; a new passenger, Ryan Anderson, and the bike being decked out in red and white (it was formerly blue and yellow), the colours of sponsors West End Precision Ltd.However, the pair are still racing under the banner of Mick Robson Racing, in memory of Ian’s close friend, Mick, who died last year.

In a change to racing regulations for this year, the team is having to use a standard engine; with funds not allowing Ian to buy a new one, they are using the old one de-tuned, leaving the pair with considerably less power.

After incurring severe damage to the bike at the last meeting of 2010 at Mallory in October, Ian did a lot of rebuilding over the winter. As such, this year’s first meeting, a North Gloucester F1 Sidecar Road Race championship round at Cadwell Park, was used to test handling, run the engine in and give driver and passenger a chance to get to know each other.

On the Saturday at Cadwell, starting from the back, they earned two fourth places, pulling in before the chequered flag as they are not contending that championship. On the Sunday, they gained a second place.

first British round took place at Brands Hatch in April, using the Indy circuit, where they qualified fourteenth and in the first race came twelfth. In the second race, they started twelfth but had a DNF, because on lap 14 they had a spin and were hit by Gordon Shand. Ryan ended up in hospital with concussion and a fractured thumb, and the bike was again badly damaged.

After a lot of rebuilding and with Ryan feeling fit to race again, the pair competed in the second British round, at Brands. This time they faced the daunting prospect of the full Grand Prix circuit (twice the distance of the Indy), which Ian had never seen before. They arrived for Friday testing only to find that Ian couldn’t dial the bike in after it being rebuilt, resulting in him losing confidence in the bike.

The bike was still not perfect on Saturday, but they nevertheless managed to qualify seventeenth and gained fourteenth, twelfth and eleventh places respectively in the races. This meant that, despite being at the tail end of the field, they managed to pick up championship points in every race.

Introduction to Mick Robson Racing

Ian Drowne and Michael Swift

Mick is a long time friend of Ian & Michael, Ian raced against Mick during the nineties - they had some big battles but always remained good friends.

In 2007 Mick was quite ill and asked Ian if he would race his short F1 outfit in 2008.  Ian had not raced since 1997 so he took a bit of persuading - as it turned out Mick was well enough to race!!!!

In 2008, the highlight of the season for Ian was at a NG Pembrey meeting where Mick & passenger, Ken Edwards, qualified on pole with Ian & Garry Andrews 2nd.  Mick & Ken were 2nd in the NG F2 class at the end of the season with Ian & Garry also coming 2nd in the NG F1 class.

2009 saw Ian again race Mick's short F1 machine with Ken Edwards as passenger until Ken took a high speed spill at Thruxton.  Jonny Allum then stepped in for the rest of the season except at Oulton Park where Ben Ransley shared the honours.  Mick had not raced all season until Oulton Park but started 18th because of a problem in qualifying.  He came through the field to finish 3rd overall & first in class

The season ended with Ian and Jonny as NG open sidecar champions 12 years after his last one in 1997!!!!

Farewell to Mick

Mick Robson

It's with heavy heart that I have to say that Mick Robson has passed away after battling against illness for a long time.

Mick was one of my dearest and closest friends I met him at Pembrey in the early nineties he was approachable intelligent funny, modest and helpful. (He didn't suffer fools gladly) We went on to have some of the biggest battles on track that I can remember in the years to follow.

2010 Season Round-Up

North Gloucester F1 Sidecar Champions

This year has seen Ian Drowne secure his sixth North Gloucester F1 Sidecar Road Race championship title of his career.

Things began well at Brands Hatch in March, with Ian and passenger Michael Swift taking a fifth and third on their first time out on their Mick Robson Racing LCR Suzuki. The defending sidecar champion had hoped for “top sixes from the weekend,” so was pleased with the outcome of the weekend.
